Strategy # 4—Create an Internal RAID Array

This strategy is possible if your computer’s BIOS supports RAID (or you add a dedicated RAID controller), your computer’s case has space for multiple hard disks, and your computer’s power supply provides enough power for multiple disks. This modification will add disk redundancy and increase capacity. However, there are plenty of downsides. First, software- or firmware-based RAID will impact performance. Adding a dedicated RAID controller will help, but be careful—many low-cost add-in RAID controllers employ firmware-based RAID, and provide no performance benefit.

Second, building an internal RAID array is complex, and if problems occur, you are probably on your own.

Third, if you need to move your disks to another system, don’t assume the replacement system’s firmware-based RAID is compatible with your original system. You will likely have to perform a complete RAID array rebuild, losing your data in the process. In my opinion, an external disk array is a better option.
